Emerging Vienna 1900

The app of the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art facilitates a range of exploration modes for the collection Vienna 1900. Design/Arts and Crafts 1890–1938. The app offers authentic insights through original photos and videos, drawing on a range of voices with audio contributions from a variety of MAK team members, and enabling visitors to comment on exhibits using snapshots. It is designed to allow anyone interested to browse the Vienna 1900 collection, to survey or revisit it, even when away from the museum. While inside the museum, visitors can use the app to follow a tour, or simply wander at will through the exhibition spaces and call up individual objects according to personal interest. Visitors are invited to leave snapshots of selected objects of the collection on a “pinboard,” and to share these via social networks. The app is designed to work as a firm foundation for future extensions into other permanent exhibition areas of the MAK. One particular focus in designing the interaction was to balance requirements regarding how the app will be used inside and outside the museum.
